Today marks our “official” start of the 2012-13 school year. Even though we started 4th grade a few months ago and enjoy a short summer break — this marks the “1st day” for county evaluation purposes.
I can not believe I am starting my 5th year homeschooling! Five starts and each one has begun the same – DONUTS!

Both boys get to pick out ONE gooey donut to celebrate the start of a new homeschool year! This will be the 1st year I will not be joining them as I stick to my 3 in 30 goals!
~NEW THINGS~
Geography Matters – Trail Guide to Learning: Pathways of Settlement (mentioned in earlier posts)
Teaching Textbooks: Math 4
Visual Latin - you can watch six lessons free!
Both Teaching Textbooks and Visual Latin require my computer – which I am happy for the break to work on some preschool things with little man. (TT is straight computer w/ an online grade book while VL offers worksheets)

Are you using any new curriculum this coming year? We will continue using All About Spelling and Apologia Science.
If you’re looking for Economics I’d love to suggest Economics For Everybody. I really enjoyed it (for myself). Watch the 1st lesson!

Looks like you’re off to a GREAT start!!!!!
Yay! Love the donut tradition! (I wouldn’t have the self-control you have!) We always start with a Bob Evans trip here.
We love, love, love Visual Latin! Have a great year.
ooh – what a great way to kick off the year
We are using TruthQuest History this year. We’ve already started and we are loving it! Also, I will be tweaking my oldest son’s math curriculum come September (that’s when we officially start back up again, but we have been learning throughout this summer).
Donuts, what a great tradition!
Happy learning!
We are all about Dunkin’ Donuts here!
That’s a nice tradition. I wanted to start July 24, but I think I need a couple of extra weeks to plan some more. I love the flexibility of homeschool.
Our newest thing this year is changing to Saxon Math. My daughter (6th grade) will be taking a math class through our homeschool middle school cooperative. My son will be doing Saxon 3. I am hoping this will be a good fit for them.
We are sticking with our tried and true Story of The World, Writing With Ease, and Spelling Workout.
My mindset has been changing a lot this summer as I’ve delved into Leigh Bortins’ writings — heading more to be classical I think. I just love the freedom to adjust as we go along.
Blessings on your school year, Stef.
We continuing to use Time4Learning and Spelling City as our core curriculum. We just moved to a new state, so we will add history, geography, state facts, etc. The other thing I would like to add this year is a “homesteading” class. We have moved to a farm, and I think my daughter needs to learn more about growing and preserving the food we eat. I plan on making it very hands on as far as growing, cooking, and eating the fruits (and veggies) of our gardening labor. This means I get to try new recipies with fresh foods also! I wish you the best in your new school year!!
