Free Resources for Elementary Teachers (review)

I had the great opportunity of meeting Colleen Kessler – author, former teacher, published writer, homeschool mom – at the 2:1 Conference.  To be honest … I don’t think I let the woman out of my sight.  She is such a neat lady!

When she snuck her book, Free Resources for Elementary Teachers, into my bag I was not only grateful but overly excited to dig into this frugal mom’s treasure trove of ideas.

Before I cracked the cover Colleen informed me, “I wrote this for public school teachers because they have to pay for their own resources, but this is a benefit to homeschool moms too”.  Definitely since hey – we pay for our own resources too!

The book is broken down into 11 chapters by subject:  Literacy Resources, Math, Science, Social Studies, Health & PE, Art & Music, a list of teacher blogs, and a list of homeschool blogs (which I am not listed, so this is a fair review).

Colleen starts and ends each chapter with intelligent heart to heart advice …
“Be creative as you stock your math supplies. Beans and pasta make great manipulatives and game pieces”.
“Science doesn’t have to be to expensive; it has to be accessible and engaging”.

After each chapter Colleen offers a few pages of Frugal Fun Activities and Games to Promote (subject) without Spending Money.  Who can do without a few more practical ideas and fun activities during “down time”, “transitions”, rainy days, or just something new.

A few of Colleen’s ideas I will be implementing in June: Composer of the Month, Invention Questions, Guess the Adjective, Story Jars, and Estimation Jars.

If you’re looking for worksheets, games, lesson plans, kits, math software, writing prompts, reading clubs, maps, posters, etc. this  book is boiling over with links directly to everything you need!

I realize the book is written to a classroom teacher, but for this homeschool mom – this book is a must have resource and I recommend it to all my homeschool friends!

The beauty of this book is that it works for any “type” of homeschool style and takes the work out of the late night google searches.

If you are interested in other books Colleen has written or looking for hands on learning fun – definitely check out her blog Raising Life Long Learners.

Tactile Tuesday – Owls

This past weekend we took out the boat and came in after sunset. To our surprise a small owl was perched on the rail of the dock! We were less than 10ft away. We watched it fly into a tree nearby and were amazed to see two more owls already in the tree!

When we got home we checked our field guide to identify what type of owls we had seen! Later – the boy decided to draw the barred owl as a gift for me to remember that fun night. (he is the sweetest boy evah!) Later he sculpted an owl out of play doh as we discussed field markings.

What have your tactile learners been working on this week??
Since this is a weekly meme please link up a recent post regarding tactile learning below. Please be specific i.e. Play Doh Owl.  (link directly to a tactile learning post and link back here so others can be encouraged teaching their tactile learners!)

Bible 90 Days

There is something lovely about women in God’s Word early each morning and then turning to spur one another on!

This past spring I was overwhelmed with life, online obligations, and homeschooling so I stepped away from my #goodmorninggirls group.  I reasoned I did not have the time, nor desire because I felt drained.  Mostly because I was too busy juggling distractions.

Thankfully I join them this morning and 3 out of 4 of us are reading the bible in 90 days (with 300 others on Facebook).

When I was first contacted by my friends to come back to our daily emails I had absolutely ZERO intention of doing the bible reading.  Yet something in my heart moved me to ask my husband.

Actually, I texted my husband, “wanna read the bible in 90 days”.  When he replied yes, and after I picked my jaw up off the floor – I signed us up.  Memorial Day to Labor Day, 12 pages per day – 45 minutes – God’s Word being read in our home – together.

Lord do something amazing in our hearts! Please refresh our faith, our marriage, and give us a new passion for the things You love!  Help us to raise our children upon Your Word!
